How To Change Pictures to Black and White in Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word is a flexible office program. This program is very lightweight and user-friendly, especially to those who are used to the interface. Microsoft Word is not only a word processor, but you can also do some basic editing of photos and images, which can be useful if you are writing something that requires illustrations. There is not much photo editing that you can do with this program, but you have access to some simple editing functions, such as improving contrast and brightness, resizing, and the like.

Open your MS Word program. Click your “Start,” button, and look for the item for “Microsoft Word.” If you think that you are going to use the program often, it is always recommended to have or create a desktop shortcut. Or, if you have Windows 7, you can right-click on the item and select “Pin to Taskbar” or “Pin to Start Menu” for easy access.
Make a new document. Click the “File” menu on the upper-leftmost part of your window, and choose “New.” This would give you a blank page similar to a white bond paper. Open the “File” menu once more and locate the “Insert” tab. A small menu should show, choose “Picture” from the choices in the menu.
Browse for the image you would like to insert into your frame. After navigating through your documents for the required file, drag your cursor to it and click it. The file name of your image should appear inside the small white box at the bottom section of the “Insert Picture” window. Choose “Insert.”
Toggle the small squares on the edges to change the size of the picture. Holding the shift key allows the image to retain its proportions as it increases or decreases in size. Consider experimenting with the placement of the picture along the text that goes with it to get the layout that is most easy on the eye.
Right-click on the image and select "Format Picture.” From the “Format Picture” window, select "Recolor." It allows the manipulation of a colored image to either: black and white, grayscale, washout or sepia effects, using the program alone.
Fiddle with the contrast and the brightness of the image. Choose either of the '"Brightness" or "Contrast" option under the "Format Picture" window. Heave the arrow from right to left in order to either increase or decrease the contrast and brightness of the image. This allows you to correct the harmony of the colors once the image has been rendered to black and white.
Always save your document. Click “File.” Choose either “Save” or “Save As.” A window will appear again to let you save it in a file type or file name of your choice. Click “Save,” at the bottom section of the “Save” window when you are done. Saving prevents any complications that may arise when the program or computer crashes or closes without prior notice.

Here are some final notes. Any concern regarding the location of the tabs or editing processes may be searched from the “Help” menu. If the image you are to use will directly come from an external device like a camera or a scanner, make sure that the device is turned on and is connected to your computer. If the program cannot detect your device, reconnect your device and try again. This should also work with a web camera.
